In Niger, the military junta announced, on Friday May 8, 2026, the immediate suspension of nine French media outlets throughout the national territory. These are France 24, Radio France Internationale, Agence France-Presse, TV5 Monde, TF1 Info, Jeune Afrique, Mediapart, France Afrique Media as well as LSI Africa.
The decision was made public through a press release from the National Communication Observatory (ONC), read on public television Télé-Sahel.
The suspension concerns all means of dissemination, in particular satellite packages, cable networks, digital platforms, websites and mobile applications, according to the structure which accuses the bodies concerned of disseminating content likely to seriously endanger public order, national unity, social cohesion and the stability of the institutions of the Republic.
The Nigerien authorities regularly criticize these media for coverage deemed biased of security and political issues in the Sahel, particularly concerning jihadist attacks and state governance.
