Study warns of a hidden danger in meat and dairy alternatives

A recent study has shown that plant-based alternatives to meat and dairy may contain mycotoxins produced by certain types of mold.

The researchers analyzed 212 food products, including plant-based burgers, plant-based sausages, oat milk, soy milk, and almond milk. The results showed that at least one type of mycotoxin was present in all samples, and many contained several types of these toxins together.

Scientists explained that these toxic substances are commonly found in the grains, legumes, and seeds from which these food products are made. Although the concentrations of toxins were below the safe limits allowed, researchers warn that regular and exclusive consumption of plant products may lead to a gradual accumulation of these substances in the body.

The study authors emphasize that these types of mycotoxins may not pose an immediate health risk, but the long-term accumulation of mycotoxins in the body can, in some cases, cause liver and kidney damage, weakened immunity, and an increased risk of certain diseases.

Some people turn to plant-based meat and dairy alternatives for health reasons related to their bodies' sensitivity to animal proteins or some substances found in milk derivatives, and some consider them a healthy source of protein and fiber.
