Uganda: Bodies recovered after boat sinks

Inconsolable residents in Uganda as rescuers recover the bodies of victims of Tuesday's boat capsize. The incident occurred on the Nguse River in the Kagadi district of western Uganda.

The search continues, and police announced Wednesday that a survivor has been found. They added that the lack of a passenger list makes it difficult to confirm the number of missing persons.

"So far, we have recovered two bodies and two more are being transferred; we hope to complete the entire operation," said Sulaiman Karungi, Maritime Police, Ugandan Police Force.

The causes of the tragedy also remain to be determined. Police point to overloading, as between 35 and 40 people were on board the vessel.

"It's really unfortunate that the cargo was unsafe. It was a very dangerous overload. If you see the boat and are told there were 40 or 39 people on board, you can't imagine it," says Sulaiman Karungi.

The region has seen numerous boating accidents, particularly on Lake Victoria, where 20 people died when a boat capsized in August 2023.
