A team of scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital has developed an AI-based tool that allows for the assessment of the risk of domestic violence faced by a patient admitted to the hospital.
This is in order to prevent potential accidents.
An article on this subject has been published on the website of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States.
The article stated that millions of people in the United States experience domestic violence every year. However, many patients who visit hospitals with various complaints do not report such tragedies to their doctors, fearing for their safety.
Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital trained artificial intelligence on data from nearly 6,000 people. The AI learned to identify domestic violence risk factors based on the types of medical complaints patients presented with. Specifically, this included presentations of chest pain, various psychological disorders, and reproductive problems.
In addition, the system takes into account repeated requests for painkillers and radiographic imaging (X-rays).
Doctors plan to use this model to identify individuals who may be at risk of violence. They will then have private conversations with these individuals about domestic violence and be informed of available support options.
