The Democratic Republic of Congo won against Jamaica, becoming the tenth African nation qualified for the Football World Cup, scheduled for June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
So far, Africa has only had five representatives in the final stages. But with the expansion of the tournament to 48 teams for the 2026 edition (compared to 32 previously), the continent will send a record number of ten selections. The DRC Leopards validated their qualification early this Wednesday in Mexico, ending their 52-year absence, thanks to a 1-0 victory against the Reggae Boyz in the FIFA play-off tournament.
The qualified African teams are: Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cape Verde, South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
All these nations have already started their preparation for the competition. Note that Ghana recently parted ways with its coach, Otto Addo, following poor performances in friendly matches against Austria and Germany.
Four African teams have already reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup: Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, Ghana in 2010 and Morocco in 2022.
Furthermore, this edition of the World Cup will once again take place without Italy. The Squadra Azzurra will miss the World Cup for the third time in a row, after their elimination in the play-off against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
