Dr. Nadezhda Chernyshova stated that the summer heat prompts many people to use air conditioners, but the sudden transition from hot weather to a cold environment can lead to health problems.
The doctor recommends following five rules to reduce unwanted health consequences.
The difference between the outside temperature and the air-conditioned space should not exceed 10 degrees Celsius, with the temperature being gradually reduced. Setting the air conditioner to 18 degrees Celsius in hot weather is not recommended, as it may lead to colds, exacerbate chronic illnesses, and raise blood pressure.
The cold air stream should not be directed directly towards the body.
The room should be ventilated regularly by turning off the air conditioner every three to four hours and opening the windows for 15 minutes. It is preferable to open the windows from different directions to create what is known as "quick ventilation," with the aim of quickly refreshing the air.
It is preferable to avoid sleeping with the air conditioner running, unless it has a special night mode. It is best to cool the room before going to sleep and then turn off the air conditioner.
The air conditioner filters should be cleaned regularly, as neglect may lead to the accumulation of pollutants and microorganisms, which negatively affects the air quality in the place.
The doctor stressed that adhering to these simple recommendations helps to better adapt to high temperatures and reduces the risk of health problems associated with the misuse of air conditioning.
