A study conducted by scientists from Taipei Medical University in Taiwan showed that consuming flaxseed oil with added curcumin fights obesity and prevents fat accumulation in the liver.
The experiment was conducted on Syrian hamsters, which were subjected to a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet for eight weeks. One group of these animals, along with the diet, received low doses of a mixture of flaxseed oil and curcumin, while the other group received high doses of this mixture.
The researchers noted that all the experimental animals that received this dietary supplement experienced a decrease in triglyceride, total cholesterol, and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels in the blood, with the most pronounced effect seen in animals that received high doses of the mixture.
Scientists found that the mixture enhanced the excretion of fats and cholesterol through feces, and also changed the level of fats in the blood and liver. Researchers suggest that flaxseed oil improves the absorption of curcumin (which is fat-soluble), and complements its effect thanks to omega-3 fatty acids.
The researchers noted that their findings were based on experiments conducted on laboratory animals, so they cannot be directly applied to humans, but at the same time they indicate that the combination of curcumin with flaxseed oil may represent a promising nutritional strategy to support liver function and control lipid metabolism disorders.
