But according to him, manganese is a very important micronutrient, and a deficiency or excess of it can cause serious health problems.

1- Manganese affects the immune system because it is a component of an antioxidant enzyme that neutralizes superoxide radicals. This protects mitochondria and nerve cells from damage. Therefore, a decrease in the activity of this enzyme increases oxidative stress, which may lead to cancer and inflammation.

2 - Manganese is important for the synthesis of glycosaminoglycan molecules, including hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate, which are involved in the normal functioning of connective tissues.

3 - Manganese deficiency causes the following symptoms in the musculoskeletal system: impaired growth and development, problems with bones and cartilage, and delayed wound healing.

4 - Manganese deficiency, along with copper deficiency, reduces the activity of cells responsible for bone formation and reduces bone mineralization, which may lead to an increased risk of fractures, decreased bone density, and osteoporosis.

According to him, women should pay special attention to their manganese levels, as it is involved in the production of sex hormones, particularly progesterone and prolactin. A progesterone deficiency can cause pelvic organ fibrosis and infertility in women. It also negatively affects ovarian function and increases the risk of infertility.

The doctor points out that manganese activates enzymes involved in gluconeogenesis—the process of producing glucose from non-carbohydrate sources. These enzymes convert lactate (lactic acid) and amino acids into glucose, thus maintaining sufficient energy production in the body.

He says: "Manganese deficiency impairs glucose utilization and may cause insulin resistance—a predisposing factor for diabetes. Studies have shown that manganese deficiency is common among those with type 2 diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome."

In addition, manganese is essential for the normal function of an enzyme involved in protein metabolism. Manganese deficiency reduces the liver's detoxification of ammonia, contributing to poisoning.

Finally, manganese plays a role in nervous system function, regulating emotions and cognitive functions. A deficiency may lead to memory problems, depression, and epilepsy.

He warns: "But we must know that an excess of manganese in the human body causes neurological problems, reduces cognitive functions, and contributes to the appearance of symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease."
