Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes said that Brazil should be considered among the favorites to win the FIFA World Cup, which begins this week in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The Newcastle United captain disagreed with Brazilian media claims that the Brazilian team lacks the strength of previous World Cups as they bid for a record-breaking sixth World Cup title.
"A lot of people are commenting just to get attention," Bruno said.
"Brazil is one of the favorites in every competition. No other team has five stars on their shirt. We have great players who shine at the biggest clubs in the world, so our national team and its players deserve the respect they deserve."
Despite not winning the World Cup in 24 years, Brazil remains the most successful team in the competition's 96-year history with five trophies, ahead of Germany and Italy, who have each won four.
Bruno warned against underestimating the South Americans.
"Anything can happen on the pitch. Being the favorite doesn't guarantee victory, but we are among the candidates," he said.
Bruno also commented on the tactical formation Brazil will likely use in their Group C opener against Morocco.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti has previously preferred a 4-2-4 formation, but his decision to replace injured full-back Wesley with midfielder Ederson on Sunday (June 7) has fueled speculation that he will prefer a 4-3-3 formation in future World Cup matches.
"A 4-2-4 gives you more options in attack, but on the other hand, the team will be more direct," Bruno said.
Brazil will begin their World Cup campaign against Morocco in New Jersey, before facing Haiti and Scotland in the group stage.
