Dr. Olga Olankina, an expert at the "Hemotest" laboratory, explained the causes of dry mouth, or what is known as "Xerostomia" (dry mouth syndrome), in healthy people.

According to her, the main cause of dry mouth is excessive caffeine consumption, because coffee and strong tea have a mild diuretic effect, as they accelerate the removal of fluids from the body through the kidneys, temporarily reducing the total amount of water in the tissues.

She says: "When you drink strong coffee or tea, and you drink too little fluid, and you become dehydrated, the salivary glands reduce saliva production. This mechanism is temporary, because drinking water restores saliva production to its normal level."

The doctor points out that dry mouth can occur as a result of breathing through the mouth while sleeping, or sleeping in a room with dry air during winter. According to her, the problem can be solved by using a humidifier and nasal breathing.

In addition, antihistamines, diuretics, and some antidepressants may cause dry mouth. This is an expected side effect, not a disease in itself. Therefore, you should consult your doctor to stop taking the medication or switch to a different one to improve the condition without needing further treatment.
