Chelsea: Maresca had already intended to coach City despite still having a contract

Chelsea has finally spoken out after Manchester City officially appointed Enzo Maresca as their new manager starting next season.

In an official club statement, the Blues revealed that Maresca's departure in early 2026 was prompted by his desire to replace Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.

Chelsea said they had known since last autumn that Maresca had the potential to succeed Guardiola.

According to the London club, the former manager is keen to take the opportunity despite still being tied to a long-term contract with Chelsea.

"It has become clear to us that he is eager to succeed Guardiola and is fully committed to pursuing that opportunity, despite being tied to a long-term contract that cannot be terminated unilaterally," Chelsea wrote on their official website.

Chelsea revealed Maresca then abruptly resigned in December 2025 before officially leaving the London club on January 1, 2026.
