Chinese social media networks have been circulating pictures of an unknown new-generation Chinese tank, equipped with an unmanned turret, and differing in design from the Type 100 tank that has entered service in the Chinese army.
Images circulating online showed the tank being transported on a tarpaulin-covered trailer via a public road, sparking widespread speculation about the nature and specifications of the new vehicle.
Although the Type 100 tank wasn't officially unveiled until September 2025, it is currently the only new-generation main battle tank in active service with the Chinese military. However, the emergence of this new tank has led observers to speculate that China may be relying on two classes of modern tanks operating in an integrated manner.
Military Watch reported that the Type 100 tank weighs about 40 tons, while the new, larger tank is believed to weigh around 60 tons, based on a similar design and possibly shared technologies with the smaller version.
The new tank features seven pairs of track wheels, compared to six pairs in the Type 100, as well as thicker frontal armor and a main gun that appears larger, likely to be 125 mm, compared to a 105 mm gun in the Type 100.
The larger size of the tank's structure also allowed some analysts to hypothesize the possibility of integrating drones into the vehicle for use in combat and reconnaissance missions.
Military Watch noted that the level of armor protection in the new tank may be among the best in the world, when compared to the Russian T-14 Armata tank, of which the Russian army has not yet begun receiving large numbers.
The report also noted that the tank's design theoretically allows for the installation of a larger 140mm or 152mm gun, but the failure to adopt this option may reflect a continued preference for missiles and drones as the primary means of countering modern armor.
