DRC: Migrants deported from the USA begin to leave Kinshasa

More than half of the South American migrants deported from the United States to the Democratic Republic of Congo have now left the country to return to their country of origin, according to the Congolese government.

On April 17, fifteen nationals from Colombia, Ecuador and Peru were transferred to Kinshasa as part of a controversial Washington program to expel migrants to third countries.

The DRC, one of the African countries that agreed to host these people, maintains that this arrangement is only temporary. Authorities indicate that further departures are planned in the coming days.

The arrival of these migrants in the Congolese capital sparked strong criticism from civil society in a country where nearly three-quarters of the population lives below the poverty line. Human rights organizations also condemned these agreements, arguing that they violate international law.
