Endocrinologist Dr. Sofia Tsaturyan stated that it is very important for diabetics to avoid certain foods to prevent their health condition from worsening.
She says: "First of all, avoid eating foods rich in simple carbohydrates, such as sugar, sweets, chocolate, jam, honey and sweet pastries, because these foods raise blood sugar levels quickly, causing sharp spikes."
According to her, sugary drinks, such as sodas, canned juices, energy drinks, and sweetened tea, are also harmful to diabetics. She advises diabetics to avoid refined carbohydrates, such as those found in white bread, cakes, white rice, and pasta made from wheat flour, because all these foods have a high glycemic index and raise blood sugar levels quickly. Instead, she recommends consuming whole-grain products.
In addition, the doctor recommends that diabetics avoid processed foods, such as sausages, hot dogs, and ready-made meals, because they often contain hidden sugars, trans fats, and high amounts of salt, which negatively affect blood vessels and overall health.
She says: "Diabetics are not completely prohibited from eating fruit, but they should limit their consumption of some of them. Bananas, grapes, and figs contain a high percentage of sugar and can cause a sharp rise in glucose levels."
