Iran announced on Monday that it had halted its military operations against Israel after “delivering a painful response to the enemy,” while Israeli reports indicated that Tel Aviv had stopped its raids on Iran at the request of US President Donald Trump, following a round of military escalation between the two sides.
The Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters of the Iranian armed forces said in a statement that Tehran’s missile attacks on Israel were in response to Israel’s targeting of Beirut’s southern suburbs, stressing that Iran would respond “more harshly” if Israel continued its attacks on Lebanon.
The Iranian announcement came hours after the two sides exchanged fire for the first time since the ceasefire took effect. On Sunday evening, Iran launched volleys of missiles toward Israel in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike that targeted Beirut's southern suburbs, reportedly killing two people and wounding 11 others. Israel claimed the strike targeted a Hezbollah command and planning center.
Following the Iranian attack, Israel announced that its fighter jets had bombed military targets in western and central Iran overnight.
In this context, the Iranian news agency Tasnim, citing emergency services, reported that at least 15 people were injured in the recent Israeli attacks on Iran, including 14 in Khuzestan province, located north of the Persian Gulf, and one in Tehran. One of the injured remains hospitalized. The agency added that no deaths have been reported so far, but this information could not be independently verified.
For its part, the Israeli newspaper Yisrael Hayom reported that Israel and the United States conveyed a message to Iran stating that no new attacks would be launched against it if it refrained from firing again. Channel 12 also quoted a senior official as saying that Israel halted its airstrikes on Iran at Trump's request.
But the Israeli official indicated that Israel would continue its operations in Lebanon, stressing that the strikes in southern Lebanon would continue “in full force” in the coming days, adding that Israel would attack the southern suburbs of Beirut if Hezbollah’s attacks on Israeli settlements continued.
This escalation comes amid continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon despite a truce that went into effect on April 17, while Iran had previously warned of the repercussions of any Israeli targeting of Beirut's southern suburbs.
