Kenya's High Court upheld the removal of former Vice President Rigathi Gachagua by parliament in October 2024.
The judges, however, stated that the former vice president had not received a fair trial, as the impeachment proceedings had been initiated in the Senate while Rigathi Gachagua was hospitalized.
The High Court, however, stated that it could not overturn a decision falling under the purview of the legislative branch, provided that it did not violate the constitutional and procedural rights of the applicant.
But she ordered the Senate to pay the sum of $386,500 to Rigathi Gachagua, whose right to be heard was violated.
The High Court verdict also confirmed the legality of Kithure Kindiki's appointment as vice-president.
Rigathi Gachagua was elected to the position of vice-president jointly with President William Ruto in the 2022 general elections in Kenya.
