Former UEFA President Michel Platini has filed a criminal complaint against FIFA President Gianni Infantino in France, accusing him of attempting to remove him from the FIFA presidential election race.
The Independent reported on Wednesday that Platini's lawyer, Olivier Baratelli, confirmed the lawsuit was filed just days before the 2026 World Cup.
In the complaint document, Infantino is one of the parties named as responsible for alleged actions that hampered Platini's chances of leading FIFA.
Baratelli also stated that the complaint accuses Infantino and several others of attempting to remove Platini from the FIFA presidential race. In fact, according to the complaint, Infantino is described as the "primary" figure in this effort.
Platini was previously touted as Sepp Blatter's successor as FIFA president in 2016. However, his chances were dashed after FIFA opened an ethics investigation into a payment of two million Swiss francs he received from Blatter in 2011.
