US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that negotiators were in the final stages of talks aimed at reaching an agreement to end the war in the Middle East, after Tehran and Israel announced a halt to mutual attacks that had raised fears of a renewed large-scale conflict.
Trump has repeatedly spoken about the imminent signing of a memorandum of understanding with Iran, but diplomatic efforts have yet to produce any agreement that would put a definitive end to the war that began more than 100 days ago with an American-Israeli attack on the Islamic Republic.
"We are in the final stages of reaching an agreement that will be very good," Trump said after attending an NBA Finals game in New York.
He added, in response to a question, that reaching an agreement “will take two or three days.”
In contrast, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said on Tuesday that his country is prepared for the option of war despite preferring the language of diplomacy.
In a post published by Qalibaf on the “X” platform, he wrote: “We prefer the language of diplomacy, but we speak other languages much more fluently. If you break your promises, we will immediately switch to the language we speak best, and then you will have no choice but to face the consequences and results that you have created yourselves.”
Since April 13, the United States has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports, including those on the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital to global energy supplies. Iran responded by restricting ship passage through the strait to those that coordinate with it, amid fears that the ceasefire could collapse and war could resume, driving up energy prices and inflation levels globally.
