The military government arrested about 150 civilians as a result of the census and recruitment drive for military service.
A representative of the Rangoon Scout Network (RSN) told RFA that in the three months from April to June 2026, the military government arrested about 150 civilians in Rangoon Region due to censuses and recruitment drives for military service.
An official from the Rangoon Scout Network (RSN) said that there is an increase in the number of arrests around the time new military training courses are starting.
“In April, the military began to change into civilian clothes during the Thingyan festival, so the number of arrests decreased. But in May and June, they increased again. As the new military training period approached, there were more arrests to fill the gap. They arrested people on the street, called them by name, and took them away after checking their guest list. They filled the designated number of soldiers, and in the beginning, they were released with money, but as the training period approached, they became more strict.”
According to the RSN, 32 people were arrested in April, 61 in May, and 57 in June, and these arrests occurred in more than 15 townships.
He said that most of the men arrested, aged between 18 and 35, were conscripted for military service.
According to the RSN, 44 of those arrested in the past three months were taken by the military government for military training, including 11 in April, 20 in May, and 13 in June.
Additionally, it was reported that 9 people were arrested in April, 11 in May, and 17 in June, a total of 37 people were arrested under the pretext of checking guests.
This information is based on sources on the ground, and in reality, it is likely to be higher.
RFA contacted the military government's spokesman, Yangon Region's Minister of Information, Relief and Religious Affairs, U Nay Lin Htun, by telephone regarding the matter, but he did not respond.
The Rangoon Scout Network (RSN) is a group that emerged after the military coup and focuses on reporting on unusual events in Yangon Region and the activities of the military-appointed government that should be noted.
According to the National Unity Government (NUG) Ministry of Human Rights, there were over 33,092 youths recruited from May 2025 to June 30, 2026, including nearly 2,000 (1,944) cases of forcible abduction and military service. The NUG Ministry of Human Rights list shows that 2,321 youths from Yangon Region were sent for military training.
