Officials said Sunday that the relocation of the military airport in the southwestern South Korean city of Gwangju is accelerating after the site was chosen to build a large semiconductor manufacturing complex.

The site of Gwangju military airport was chosen for the complex as part of the South Korean government’s “Three Mega Projects,” which focus on large-scale regional investment in semiconductors, physical artificial intelligence, and artificial intelligence data centers.

A committee comprising officials from the central and regional governments is scheduled to meet later this month to determine a candidate site for relocating the airport. The neighboring district of Muan was selected as the initial candidate last April.

The regional government overseeing Guangzhou expects the final relocation site to be determined by the end of this year and plans to proceed with the airport relocation and complex development in parallel, with the aim of starting semiconductor production in 2030.
