The Al-Qaeda-affiliated Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) group in West Africa has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on military sites in Mali, and said it has seized control of at least three of them.
The confession was published through the group's official media channels.
Earlier, the Malian government reported attacks by rebels in the north of the country, targeting major cities.
The Malian army announced today that several towns across the north of the country, including the key towns of Gao and Sévaré, were targeted by rebel attacks.
It is worth noting that Mali has previously faced rebellions waged by armed groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, in addition to a separatist rebellion in the north of the country.
