Alwi silences Nishimoto to advance to the last 16 of the Japan Open

Indonesian men's singles player Alwi Farhan defeated host Kenta Nishimoto in straight games 21-14, 21-11 to advance to the last 16 of the 2026 Japan Open in Tokyo.

Alwi was able to control the course of the match and take advantage of Nishimoto's difficulties without losing focus on his own playing style.

"I don't know what happened or how Nishimoto felt today. I just took advantage of what happened on the court. I focused on my game," Alwi said in an official PBSI statement after the match.

In the round of 16, Alwi will face French representative Alex Lanier, who has often given him problems in recent meetings.

However, the 2026 Australian Open champion views the match as a challenge to test and strengthen his game.

"In the round of 16, I'll face Alex Lanier (France). It's no problem for me, even though the last few meetings were difficult. But I've had to go through a lot of uncomfortable things, which has made me stronger," said Alwi.

Alwi confirmed that he would give his all to face Lanier and maintain his progress in the Super 750 level tournament.

"So, whatever challenges lie ahead, I assure you I will fight tooth and nail," said Alwi.
