Indonesian mixed doubles pair Amri Syahnawi and Nita Violina Marwah lost their composure on crucial points as they were eliminated in the first round of the BWF World Tour Super 750 Japan Open 2026 in Tokyo.
Amri/Nita had to admit the superiority of the sixth-seeded French pair Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue in a tight two-game match with a score of 18-21, 21-23.
"Today's difficulty lay with ourselves, maintaining composure in the final points, as the game was actually a draw. We even had the lead several times. It was just managing those final points that was a problem, and it was our tactics and strategy in the final points," Amri said in an official PBSI statement after the match.
Amri/Nita had a chance to extend the match by continuing to apply pressure in the second game. However, a number of unforced errors prevented them from forcing a decider.
Nita admitted that Gicquel/Delrue's game, which often slowed down the tempo of the match, also affected their concentration and emotions.
"Our own mistakes backfired, and we lost our composure in the final points. They played a lot of tricks, wasting time, frequently asking for breaks, and changing balls when they were actually in good shape. It really bothered us. This is a lesson for us to control our emotions, be more patient, and maintain our focus in situations like this," said Nita.
However, Nita said she had anticipated the French pair's serving variations, including the flick serve which was used several times to pressure Indonesia's defense.
