Australia is chasing its first win in the knockout stages of the World Cup when it faces Egypt in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup at AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas, United States.
Australia coach Tony Popovic said the match was a great opportunity for his squad to create history, after the Socceroos twice failed to progress past the knockout stages of the World Cup, being eliminated by Italy in 2006 and Argentina in 2022.
"We have to be truly in the moment. History is made after the game, so we have to do our part throughout the match, whether it's the 90 minutes, extra time, or a penalty shootout," Popovic said, as reported on FIFA's official website.
Australia advanced to the round of 32 as runners-up in Group D. The Socceroos opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over Turkey, then lost 2-0 to the United States, before securing their place in the knockout stages with a 1-0 victory over Paraguay.
However, Australia did not come at full strength. Mathew Leckie and Jacob Italiano were both out due to injuries, requiring Popovic to adjust his team composition, particularly in maintaining a balance between defense and attack.
