| The world’s longest underwater land tunnel, the Jiaozhou Bay Second Sea Tunnel in China |
The main excavation work for the world’s longest underwater land tunnel, the Jiaozhou Bay Second Sea Tunnel, was completed today in Qingdao City, Shandong Province, eastern China.
The tunnel has a total length of 17.48 kilometers, of which 9.95 kilometers run under the seabed, and is designed for speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour. This mega-project is expected to revolutionize regional transportation by providing a fast and safe alternative to traditional land routes, facilitating the movement of people and goods between the two sides of the Gulf, and contributing to the region's economic and tourism development.
The completion of the main drilling phase is a pivotal step in the project's timeline, paving the way for the completion of the remaining engineering work, in preparation for the opening of the tunnel, which will enter the Guinness Book of Records as the longest underwater land tunnel in the world, enhancing China's position in the field of advanced infrastructure.
