Ferran Torres's solitary goal in extra time secured La Roja their second World Cup title in history, having previously won the 2010 edition.
In addition to the birth of a new champion, the end of the tournament also marked the announcement of various individual awards, including the Golden Boot which is awarded to the top scorer throughout the competition.
In the 2026 edition, the award once again went to French international striker Kylian Mbappé. The 27-year-old finished the tournament with 10 goals, ahead of Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who scored eight.
Mbappé's top scorer was confirmed after Messi failed to add to his tally in the final against Spain. This result left the Argentine player content with second place on the 2026 World Cup's all-time top scorers list.
