Despite Tehran's announcement of its closure, Trump says the Strait of Hormuz remains open to commercial shipping

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz is open to commercial shipping, despite the continued exchange of attacks between the United States and Iran, and Tehran's earlier announcement that it had closed the strategic waterway , raising concerns about safety in one of the world's most important oil shipping lanes.

Trump's remarks came during an interview with NBC.

In a telephone interview with CNN, Trump responded to a question about the US strikes on Iran on Saturday, saying: “We reached an agreement with them yesterday, and they are giving up everything.”

He noted that Iran targeted a ship with a drone two hours after the agreement.

For its part, the US Central Command  said Sunday in a post on social media that “the Strait of Hormuz is open to all vessels seeking to legally cross this international waterway.”

She added that “US forces are stationed and ready to ensure continued freedom of navigation, despite Iran’s unjustified practices of aggression, harassment, threats and arbitrary pronouncements,” stressing that “Iran does not control the Strait, and navigation is proceeding normally.”

US forces launched airstrikes on Iran for the third time in a week, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory attacks on at least five Arab countries.
