Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who briefed him on recent developments in West Asia and the way forward.
The Prime Minister said that during his call with the Iranian President on Tuesday, he reiterated the importance of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for India and the world, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.
A statement issued by the Prime Minister's office said that Modi welcomed the understanding reached and reaffirmed India's firm position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
Modi reiterated the need to continue efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region, and to protect freedom of navigation and trade.
The statement added that the Iranian president briefed the Indian prime minister, during the phone call, on the latest developments in West Asia and the proposed way forward.
Modi also said in a post on the X platform: "I spoke with the Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, about the latest developments in West Asia. I welcomed the progress made in the negotiations and expressed hope that continued efforts will lead to lasting peace in the region. I reiterated the importance of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for India and the world."
Iranian President Pezeshkian had previously invited the Indian Prime Minister to attend the funeral of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, scheduled for next week.
ccording to reports, the Indian government plans to send the Governor of Bihar, Atta Hasnain, and the Minister of State for External Affairs, Babitra Margarita, to represent India at the ceremony. The funeral is scheduled to take place between July 5 and 9.
