Egypt has reiterated its position rejecting any recognition of what is called "Somaliland," stressing that this represents a violation of the unity and sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia, according to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

This came during a phone call on Saturday between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty and his Somali counterpart, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, in which Abdel-Aty stressed Egypt’s fullsupport for Somalia and its national institutions, and its keenness on its security and stability

The Egyptian minister stressed Cairo’s commitment to the unity of Somali territory and its rejection of any measures that affect the country’s sovereignty, including the recognition of “Somaliland”.

The statement explained that the two ministers discussed the latest regional developments, particularly in the Horn of Africa, and Abdel-Aati reiterated his country’s firm position in support of Somalia’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

For his part, the Somali Foreign Minister praised the Egyptian position, expressing his country’s appreciation for the political, security and development support provided by Cairo, according to the statement.

The Somali minister stressed the importance of continued coordination between the two countries on regional issues, in order to enhance security and stability in the Horn of Africa region.
