Dr. Anton Polyakov, an endocrinologist and nutritionist, points out that tomatoes, despite their many health benefits, can pose a risk to some people and cause serious health problems.
He says: "Tomatoes have a stimulating effect on bile secretion, so they may worsen the symptoms of gallstones. They may also raise the level of uric acid in the body, increasing the risk of gout."
He adds that excessive consumption of tomatoes may also worsen the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
People with stomach problems are advised to avoid eating tomatoes, he explained:
"The organic acids in tomatoes irritate the stomach lining. In cases of gastritis, especially with an active peptic ulcer, the condition may worsen significantly. Therefore, those suffering from gastritis, peptic ulcers, gallstones, gout, or other gastrointestinal diseases in their acute stages are advised to avoid eating tomatoes."
