Following the unveiling of the fifth J-36 prototype, China continues developing its sixth-generation stealth fighter.
The Chinese military's VKontakte platform published new photographs believed to show the fifth version of the fighter prototype, which is designed with three engines.
The aircraft, which is being developed by Chengdu Aircraft Corporation, appears to have received improved air intakes and engine nozzles compared to previous models.
Chinese engineers are striving to achieve a balance between the aircraft's various characteristics, so testing continues, including trials of multiple engine nozzle types. Work is also underway to reduce the aircraft's radar and heat signatures without significantly impacting its ability to perform complex maneuvers.
According to reports, the J-36 is a long-range, multi-mission platform designed to perform missions that include targeting Airborne Early Warning and Control (AWACS) aircraft, refueling aircraft, command centers, and other elements of command and control systems in the Indo-Pacific region.
A surprise appearance: The aircraft first appeared in December 2024, and since then its development program has continued at an accelerated pace.
Five prototypes: Images circulating suggest that the testing program has reached at least the fifth prototype.
Testing progress: According to unofficial reports, four prototypes have logged more than 5,000 hours of testing, with more than 80% of core component verifications completed.
An indirect official signal: In June 2026, the aircraft appeared indirectly in an official Chinese Air Force propaganda video, which some observers considered a signal of the program's existence.
However, no information has yet been confirmed regarding the start of serial production or the manufacture of limited batches of the aircraft, as the project is still in the stage of intensive testing and improvements.
