Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyone broke the world record in the men's 1000m race during the Monaco Diamond League athletics meet.
Wanyone, the Olympic champion in the 800 meters, finished the race, which took place on Friday evening, in a time of 2:11:83 minutes, about one second ahead of Britain's Jake Whitman, while Algeria's Jamal Sejjati took third place.
Wanyone surpassed the previous record set by his compatriot Noah Ngeny 27 years ago by 0.13 seconds.
"This is the first time I have run 1000 meters, and breaking the world record right away makes me extremely happy," Wanyone said after his historic achievement. "I would like to thank the other athletes who pushed me to my limits."
It is worth noting that the 1000 meter race is a rare event, and is not included in the Olympic Games or the World Athletics Championships.
