The appearance of the Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army in the west of the country, Lieutenant General Salah al-Din al-Namroush, and the Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces in the General Command, Lieutenant General Khaled Haftar, stole the spotlight at a conference in Angola.
Al-Namroush, at the head of a delegation from the General Staff, is participating in the African Chiefs of Defense Staff Meeting 2026, held in the Angolan capital, Luanda, with senior military leaders and representatives of more than 35 African countries and international partners, to discuss ways to enhance security and stability on the continent.
The conference, themed “Leveraging Our Strengths: Enhancing Regional Security for Sustainable Prosperity,” is discussing several issues related to developing military cooperation among African nations, strengthening defense capabilities, raising readiness levels, expanding joint training programs, and supporting innovation in defense industries to address shared security challenges.
This comes at a time when the Libyan military remains divided between east and west, making the presence of Al-Namroush and Khaled Haftar sitting together during the conference particularly noteworthy, especially given the ongoing international and regional efforts to unify Libyan institutions, particularly the military.
