The Israeli consulate in New York denounced Rama Dawaji, the wife of the city's mayor, Zahran Mamdani, over reports that she co-hosted a workshop in Corsica to support Palestinians.
The consulate said in a statement that Dawaji, who is of Syrian origin, participated in a workshop in support of Palestinians where Mary, the mother of Jesus, was honored as a "Palestinian woman who gave birth under occupation."
The consulate said in a statement that Dawaji was promoting a "false narrative" against Israel, arguing that what happened involved a historical distortion and a cynical exploitation of the story of Jesus Christ for contemporary political purposes.
The statement added that any attempt to portray Jesus as having been born to a Palestinian mother or to suggest that he was a Muslim constitutes, according to the consulate, a distortion of history and the promotion of a dangerous narrative against Israel.
The consulate said: "Jesus was a Jew born in the land of Judah to his Jewish mother, Mary, and any attempt to portray him as having been born to a Palestinian mother or to suggest that he was a Muslim is a historical distortion."
The consulate's official statement concluded by saying that "the First Lady of New York City is promoting a false and dangerous narrative against Israel."
