The new leader of Britain's Labour Party, Andy Burnham , officially took over as the country's prime minister on Monday, after being tasked by King Charles III with forming a government, pledging to bring about major changes in the country.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has officially resigned from his post.
Burnham pledged to deliver a ten-year plan for Britain upon taking over as Prime Minister, stressing the need to restore political stability.
In his first speech after being tasked by King Charles III with forming the new government, he said, “Britain must show the world that we are capable of restoring our stability again,” pledging, “My first directive will be to end the phenomenon of sleeping rough in our country.”
He added that his government would bring about a “turning point” and implement the biggest changes the country has seen in 40 years.
He said his government would base politics on cooperation and problem-solving, rather than seeking to score points.
He also confirmed that the government would use public procurement to support British industry and bring manufacturing back to the country.
In this context, Burnham unveiled a 10-year plan, which he said “charts the way from our current reality to the Britain that I think we all want to reach.”
He pointed out that there are steps that can be taken immediately to give citizens some relief and support them in facing the high cost of living, announcing that he will reveal some of them starting on Tuesday.
He went on to say: “We will ensure that people can live well, and we will build a protective state that invests in the success of its citizens, rather than making them pay the price for failure.”
Buckingham Palace said in a statement that King Charles III received Starmer this morning, before his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.
Before heading to meet the King to submit his resignation, Starmer made statements to reporters on Downing Street, where he was greeted with applause by members of his government and supporters outside the Prime Minister's residence.
Starmer announced that he would formally resign as Prime Minister, adding: “My job is done.”
He praised his time in government, expressing his belief that “Britain today is stronger and fairer than it was two years ago.”
He expressed his best wishes for success to Andy Burnham, who will take over the role from him, and affirmed his full support for him.
He concluded by saying: “I leave my post with a clear conscience, and I bid you farewell with a smile on my face, and I am very proud of everything we have achieved together.”
