Mustafa Azzam, the Secretary-General of the Egyptian Football Association, revealed a major surprise regarding increasing the number of club slots in African championships next season.
Hani Abu Rida had previously submitted a request to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to increase the number of clubs participating in African championships in the new season.
Azzam said in statements on CBC channel: "We received a letter 6 days ago from the Secretary General of CAF regarding a proposal to increase the number of clubs in the African championships in the African Champions League and the Confederation Cup."
He added: "The letter stated that the Egyptian proposal to increase the number of Egyptian clubs participating in the Champions League and the Confederation Cup could not be implemented this season and will be discussed next season."
Zamalek and Pyramids are scheduled to participate in the next edition of the African Champions League, while Al-Ahly and Zed will play in the Confederation Cup.
