A statement from the Lebanese Army Command announced that “the army is beginning its deployment in the town of Zawtar al-Gharbiya - Nabatieh in coordination with the Military Coordination Group for Lebanon (MCG4L),” and called on “citizens not to go to the town of Zawtar al-Gharbiya until the security situation stabilizes,” while the army’s engineering teams began working to clear the town’s streets of explosives and remnants of the Israeli occupation.
The Israeli withdrawal from Zawtar al-Gharbiya and the deployment of the Lebanese army there came hours before the meeting between Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun and US President Donald Trump at the White House, and as a positive step after the signing of the “framework agreement”.
Earlier, a senior Lebanese security official said that army forces began deploying in the southern Lebanese town of Zawtar al-Gharbiya on Tuesday after Israeli forces withdrew from the area, in implementation of a US-brokered plan.
The plan stipulates that the Lebanese army will confiscate Hezbollah's weapons in parts of southern Lebanon, and that Israeli forces will gradually withdraw.
The Israeli army announced on Monday the start of the plan, dubbed the “experimental safe zone.” It has not issued any further comment as of Tuesday.
