Tokayev announces the beginning of a new era in the history of Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated that the entry into force of Kazakhstan's new constitution on July 1st restructures the country's political system, ushering in a new era in its history.

“Today marks the beginning of a new era in the history of sovereign Kazakhstan,” Tokayev said in a message to the people published by the Kazakh presidential press service on Wednesday. “We are embarking on an important march toward progress and development, political and economic reform, and comprehensive modernization. This day represents a radical restructuring of the political system and a transformation of the main institutions of the state and civil society.”

Tokayev congratulated his fellow citizens on "this historic event," noting that the people of Kazakhstan had made a fateful decision in the March 15 referendum on a new constitution that will determine the prospects for development for decades to come.

Tokayev stressed that "by uniting into a cohesive national entity, we will undoubtedly rise to the highest levels of world civilization and build a just Kazakhstan - a state that provides equal opportunities and inclusive development for all citizens without exception."

Kazakhstan's new constitution came into effect today, July 1. The previous constitution, in place since 1995, had undergone numerous significant amendments over the past 30 years. The new constitution establishes a unicameral parliamentary system, creates the post of vice president, and reforms advisory bodies, among other reforms.
