In a health warning that has attracted attention, an American neurologist revealed three foods he absolutely refuses to eat in order to maintain his brain health, noting that one of them could be fatal in some cases.
Neurologist Dr. Baiping Chen, known as "Dr. Peng" on social media, recently shared on his Instagram account a list of foods he avoids, stressing that the brain - the organ responsible for controlling all bodily functions, movements, thoughts and feelings - deserves special care, and that proper nutrition plays a pivotal role in maintaining its health.
During the video, the doctor mentioned a type of food that he avoids completely, which carries a risk that could lead to paralysis, loss of sight, and even death in rare cases.
Dr. Chen warned against canned foods in damaged cans, that is, cans that have suffered physical damage, such as swelling, cracking, or deep dents.
Dr. Chen says, "If the can is bulging, cracked, or has deep dents, this is a warning sign of contamination with a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum, which causes botulism."
He explains that these bacteria produce botulinum toxin, one of the most potent toxins known to humankind. A tiny amount of it can disrupt nerve signals between the brain and muscles, leading to flaccid paralysis, blurred vision, and respiratory failure, and may lead to death if not treated with the appropriate antitoxin.
The greatest danger lies in the fact that this toxin is tasteless and odorless, meaning it's impossible to detect contamination simply by looking at or smelling the food. Even if the food is thoroughly heated, the heat may not be sufficient to neutralize the toxin, making discarding the entire can the only safe option.
