Alexander Gintsburg, the scientific director of the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology of the Russian Ministry of Health, explained the principle of action of the new anti-breast cancer drug.
He told the Russian news agency Novosti that the new anti-breast cancer drug “ Areima ” works by removing the protective coating of the tumor, making it vulnerable to destruction by chemotherapy.
It was previously announced that the Russian Ministry of Health had registered a drug for the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer, based on the substance camrelizumab . This drug is produced by Petrofax Pharm in partnership with the Gamaleya Center, as part of a complete production cycle that includes the synthesis of the active ingredient.
Ginsburg said: "In fact, the protection of solid tumors is lifted, and they become vulnerable to attack by lymphocytes that destroy them. These are what are called killer cells (T-killers), or CD8 lymphocytes."
It is worth noting that the Russian Ministry of Health has registered the drug "Areima" for the immunotherapy of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).
Arima is the first adjuvant immunotherapy option of its kind in Russia for treating this highly aggressive subtype of breast cancer, which most commonly affects women under the age of 50.
The use of Arima is expected to help prevent up to 648 premature deaths annually and preserve approximately 21,000 years of life for patients with triple-negative breast cancer.
The drug "Arema" is also used to treat cancers of the nasopharynx, esophagus, and lung. It is included in the list of vital and essential medicines, as well as in the practical recommendations of the Russian Society of Gastrointestinal Oncology (RUSSCO) for the treatment of these types of cancers.
In August 2026, the drug Camrelizumab was included in the clinical recommendations issued by the Russian Ministry of Health for the treatment of nasopharyngeal cancer.
