Abdul Rahman El-Sayed won the Democratic Party nomination for the US Senate elections in Michigan, after surpassing his rival Haley Stevens, despite a huge spending campaign led by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which spent tens of millions of dollars to support Stevens and fund advertisements aimed at distorting El-Sayed’s image.
Mr. Al-Sayed's victory is seen as a major triumph for the progressive wing within the Democratic Party, particularly in Michigan, a swing state of crucial importance in the elections.
In the elections to be held next November, Mr. will face Republican candidate Mike Rogers, a former member of Congress, who won the Republican Party nomination unopposed.
This seat is pivotal to the Democrats' hopes of regaining a majority in the Senate, as Mr. [Name] will face the significant challenge of uniting the divided Democratic base after a fiercely contested primary election.
The results of the competition remained close throughout Tuesday evening, and the winner was not announced until early Wednesday morning.
In a speech to his supporters on election night, Mr. refrained from officially declaring victory, but celebrated what he called the “popular movement” that had formed around his campaign, stressing that its goal was “to restore the government to be a government of the people, not a government of corporations, interest groups and billionaires.”
He said: “We knew they would spend their money, but we didn’t expect them to spend $70 million, and for their spending on our campaign to exceed our spending by 11 to 1, yet we are still holding on.”
Mr. Al-Sayed’s victory is seen as a major setback for AIPAC, which spent more than $30 million to defeat him, accounting for about half of the total outside spending in the race, which was considered the most expensive in the history of the Democratic Party primaries.
“AIPAC spent more than $30 million to stop Dr. Abdullah El-Sayed from winning, but it wasn’t enough, because Democratic voters are fed up with the extreme view that taxpayer money should fund Israel’s bombs, wars, and genocidal ambitions,” said Margaret Derios, executive director of the Policy Project at the American Institute of Middle East Education (IMEU).
Mr. El-Sayed, a former health official, campaigned on several pledges, most notably implementing a “healthcare for all” system, halting military aid to Israel, and reforming the campaign finance system.
Mr. Sanders has received support from progressive leaders, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who have described the race as a grassroots movement against the establishment and massive government spending.
In Michigan, other progressive candidates also performed strongly, with climate activist William Lawrence winning the Democratic nomination in the 7th Congressional District, while local Rep. Donovan McKinney overtook Rep. Shri Thanidar, who was backed by AIPAC, in the 13th District.
The progressive organization RootsAction commented on the results, saying: “AIPAC has fallen in Michigan. Voters have shown they want what progressives are calling for, including health care for all, an end to endless wars, and real economic security.”
