The Wall Street Journal reported that Castillion, a U.S. defense startup, has raised more than $1 billion in funding and will use it to accelerate the production of hypersonic missiles.
American company Castillion secures over $1 billion in investment to develop hypersonic missiles
According to the company, the financing was provided by Carlyle Investment Company, JPMorgan Chase Bank, and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.
The startup plans to use the proceeds to accelerate production of the Blackbird hypersonic missile, as well as to develop larger hypersonic offensive weapons and mass-produced air defense missiles.
The newspaper noted that the US military is seeking to increase its stockpile of hypersonic missiles in an effort to counter China's growing arsenal of such weapons. At the same time, the Pentagon is asking defense companies to increase production of conventional air defense systems, such as the Patriot system, according to the newspaper.
This is due to the depletion of Western stockpiles of Patriot missiles by the conflict in Ukraine, and the reduction of the arsenal as a result of US military operations against Iran to a level that is worrying the US administration.
