The Telegram app has disappeared from the Apple store in a number of countries, on iPhones and iPads, while it remains available through the Mac App Store and Android via Google Play.
According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple attributed this action to the app containing material that violated its strict guidelines on child abuse, confirming that it was reinstated immediately after the developer removed the content and banned the offending user.
This is not the first time Telegram has faced sanctions from Apple. In 2018 it was blocked globally, then modified and reinstated. It was also subject to government restrictions in Brazil in 2023 and in China (where it remains blocked along with WhatsApp and Signal).
On another front, the app is facing increasing scrutiny in India, where it has been accused of leaking exam materials. The platform denies this, but authorities described it before the Delhi High Court as the "new dark web" of illegal online activities, prompting the government to temporarily block it.
