Dr. Alexander Omnov, a lecturer in the Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Education, explains the benefits and harms of drinking coffee with cinnamon.
According to him, cinnamon is rich in antioxidants and helps to regulate blood sugar levels, but in large quantities, due to its coumarin content, it may harm the liver, and its consumption is prohibited in the case of certain diseases.
The doctor notes that when cinnamon is consumed regularly in small amounts, it improves insulin sensitivity and slows carbohydrate absorption, helping to stabilize blood sugar levels. Its pungent flavor also allows for the use of less sugar in beverages. Therefore, adding about 0.5 grams of cinnamon to a cup of coffee is sufficient.
According to him, however, it is advisable not to overuse cinnamon. The main risk from coumarin, which puts a strain on the liver, arises with excessive consumption. Common types of cinnamon contain varying levels of this substance, and Sri Lankan cinnamon is considered safer for regular consumption.
Omnov warns that cinnamon can cause allergies, headaches, sneezing, and stomach lining irritation, in addition to affecting blood clotting. Therefore, those taking blood thinners or blood sugar-lowering medications should exercise caution. He advises those with certain liver and kidney conditions, acute gastritis, ulcers, and those who are pregnant to avoid cinnamon. He emphasizes that cinnamon is not a treatment for weight loss or diabetes.
It should be noted that children are not advised to drink cinnamon coffee due to the effect of caffeine on the developing nervous system, and the possibility of developing allergies or digestive disorders.
