Nutritionist Dr. Daria Rusakova warns against eating red watermelon with bread because it may cause bloating, fermentation in the intestines, increase pressure on the pancreas, and raise blood sugar levels.
She explains: "Eating watermelon with bread carries potential risks, as it contains a large amount of fructose along with carbohydrates. For people with impaired glucose tolerance, consuming this combination, which has a high glycemic index, may lead to a spike in blood sugar levels. Also, the large amount of fiber and simple carbohydrates may cause bloating, gas, and fermentation in the intestines. The sharp rise in blood sugar levels may increase the pressure on the pancreas in people prone to this condition."
According to her, people with diabetes, insulin resistance, impaired glucose tolerance, and various gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and kidney diseases should avoid this food combination. Also, soaking watermelon in a high-sodium soy sauce can contribute to fluid retention, so people prone to edema or high blood pressure are advised against consuming this dish.
