The Uruguayan Football Association announced on Friday the appointment of legend Diego Forlan as the national team's head coach
The Uruguayan Football Association stated on its official website that Forlan, who is one of the most important figures in Uruguayan football, will become the coach of the first team in addition to his work as the coach of the Uruguayan youth team (under 20 years old).
He explained that Forlan will return to the place where he introduced himself to world football, and where he is a symbol of an unforgettable generation in his country, to make a new contribution from the position of technical director.
The federation added in its statement that the duo Santiago Espandin and Diego Perez will work with Forlan as assistants, while Marco Mansolino will take over as physical trainer, Ignacio Bordad as goalkeeping coach, and Gabriel Skrlic as video analyst.
Forlan will take over from Argentine Marcelo Bielsa, who left his post after Uruguay's elimination from the first round of the 2026 World Cup.
Forlan’s first challenge with the national team will be the international break between next September and October, during which the team will play friendly matches.
