Discovery of a new effect of magnesium on muscle mass and strength

A study published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition showed that increased magnesium consumption may be associated with a reduced risk of muscle mass and strength loss with age.

In the study, researchers analyzed data from 3,830 South Koreans over the age of 50, dividing participants into groups based on their dietary magnesium intake. Scientists also assessed their consumption of magnesium-rich foods such as whole grains, nuts, legumes, leafy green vegetables, seaweed, and soy milk.

The results showed that people who consumed higher amounts of magnesium were 53% less likely to develop sarcopenia, a condition characterized by loss of muscle mass and strength with age, compared to those who received lower amounts of this element.

 magnesium-containing foods was also associated with a nearly 50% lower risk of sarcopenia, and this association remained even after accounting for other factors such as age, level of physical activity, body weight, amount of protein consumed, and total calories.

Scientists believe that magnesium may help maintain muscle health by reducing chronic inflammation, as the study showed that participants who consumed larger amounts of this mineral recorded lower levels of C-reactive protein, an important indicator of inflammation in the body.

Health experts indicate that magnesium plays a role in many bodily functions and may help relieve muscle cramps and pain. Some magnesium supplements may also contribute to improved sleep quality. However, doctors emphasize the importance of consulting a physician or nutritionist and undergoing the necessary tests to determine the body's needs before taking magnesium supplements, as excessive intake can cause undesirable effects.
