Do you wake up frequently during the night? 3 hidden reasons that could be behind your sleep disturbance

Dr. Maxim Gopka, an internist, points out that frequent awakenings during the night are not always the result of noise, bright light, uncomfortable bedding, or drinking coffee late at night.

Dr. Maxim Gopka, an internist, points out that frequent awakenings during the night are not always the result of noise, bright light, uncomfortable bedding, or drinking coffee late at night.

According to him, there are three other, less obvious reasons that may lie behind this problem.

Hidden dehydration is one of the most unexpected causes of nighttime awakenings.

"Not drinking enough fluids during the day can lead to thirst and a dry mouth at night, while drinking too much fluid in the evening can cause frequent awakenings due to the need to use the bathroom."

The second reason is hidden pain syndrome and internal organ disorders, which may affect sleep quality.

The doctor explained that mild, persistent pain in the spine or joints, intestinal cramps, acid reflux, or liver disorders are not always a clear cause of insomnia. However, he noted that changing position or transitioning into deep sleep can intensify these sensations and lead to awakenings.

According to the doctor, frequent nighttime awakenings may also be a result of anxiety and stress, as chronic psychological and emotional stress affects hormonal balance, especially cortisol and adrenaline levels.

Therefore, even if anxiety seems to be under control during daylight hours, its effects may appear at night through frequent awakenings, nightmares, and sleep disturbances.

For his part, sleep specialist Maxim Novikov points out that drinking a single glass of wine or beer before bed can significantly affect sleep quality, warning that alcohol before bed noticeably increases snoring, which in turn can lead to frequent awakenings during the night.
