Many of us are so attached to our smartphones that we use them even while they are charging, which raises an important question: Does using the phone while it is plugged into the charger damage the battery or reduce its lifespan?
The good news is that the short answer is "no". Although the phone may charge more slowly if used while charging, this habit does not negatively affect overall battery life, thanks to two key technologies: "bypass charging" and heat dissipation systems.
When you use your phone while it's charging on devices that support "bypass charging" technology, the phone automatically directs power directly to the apps you're using, effectively pausing the battery charging process. This ensures a smooth user experience and simultaneously protects the battery from overheating that could damage it, especially during intensive activities like gaming or video editing.
However, the downside of this technology is that the battery may not charge noticeably during intensive use, because the energy goes directly to powering the device and not to being stored in the battery.
This technology first appeared in the Sony Xperia 1 II in 2020 under the name "Power Control for Heat Suppression," and it is now available in most flagship phones from Samsung, Google, Xiaomi, and ZTE, with the exception of Apple's iPhones, which do not yet support it. However, even without this technology, using the phone while charging only slows down the charging process and does not harm the battery as long as the device does not overheat.
Most modern phones have sophisticated heat and battery management systems that prevent the temperature from rising to dangerous levels.
While not harmful in itself, it's advisable to avoid using your phone while charging whenever possible to ensure faster charging. However, if you must use it—for example, to check a message, make a call, take a photo, or even record a long video while connected to a power bank—don't worry, just monitor the device's temperature and stop if you notice it getting too hot.
Experts reveal that the idea of avoiding using your phone while charging is just one of several widespread myths. Another myth is that leaving your phone plugged in overnight damages the battery, which is completely untrue, as all modern phones automatically stop charging when they reach 100%. Many even use "optimized charging" technology that learns the user's habits, charging the battery slowly to 100% by the time you wake up, thus preserving battery health in the long run.
The idea that the battery must be completely discharged before charging is another myth. Experts advise charging the phone when its charge is between 20% and 80% to preserve battery life, rather than letting it drain completely.
In short, using your phone while charging won't damage the battery unless it overheats to dangerous levels. However, it's best to limit this use whenever possible, not to protect the battery, but to ensure it charges as quickly as possible.
