A recent study published in the scientific journal Nutrients showed that following the Mediterranean diet may significantly reduce the risk of developing chronic migraines.

Researchers analyzed data from 448 patients with migraine, comparing the dietary habits of those with the intermittent form of the disease with those with the chronic form. The results showed that participants who were more committed to the principles of the Mediterranean diet were about three times less likely to develop chronic migraine. This relationship persisted even after taking into account factors such as age, sex, body mass index, duration of the disease, overuse of painkillers, and other lifestyle factors.

Furthermore, greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with a lower number of headache days per month, but this relationship lost its statistical significance after adjusting for other dietary factors, while the effect of reducing the risk of developing chronic headaches remained constant. Scientists also found no clear link between migraine severity and consumption of water, sweetened soft drinks, or caffeine.

The researchers emphasize that following a high-quality diet may be an important factor associated with a reduced risk of chronic diseases, and they called for more future clinical studies to confirm this relationship.

A study published in the scientific journal Nutrients also showed that following the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, and high-quality plant-based nutrition reduces the risk of developing certain types of cancer in women.
